So I might have already said how much I enjoy Erin’s blog when she writes about getting out of debt via the characters “Sallie” and “Perkins”. But then she had this awesome idea for a football link-up for all those pigskin-loving ladies out there and I knew this was one cool lady, even if she is a Bengal’s fan.
Now, being from Minnesota, I have the bittersweet privilege of being a Vikings fan.
They have never won a Superbowl, though they’ve been close a few times. Every time they show potential to go far, they put our spirits and expectations right back into place. Every Monday I have a raspy voice from all my yelling.
And other times they lead me to drink…like when Brett Favre
puke joined our team.
But the loyalty that Minnesotans have for our Purple People Eaters is ridiculous. In -15 degree weather, our fans will be outside tailgating with huge smiles on their faces. And it is the only reason I’ll put clothes on my dog.
My last relationship was actually founded on the rivalry between the Vikings & Packers since he is a die-hard Packer fan. As frustrating as it was sometimes, it was a blast holding bets and debating who will win. He even got me started with setting up an all-girls Fantasy Football league and last year my team (Victorious Secret) came in 2nd! I cannot WAIT to start another season this year!
Now when it comes to college football, it’s not as big here in Minnesota. I’m a Golden Gopher due to obligation to my Alma Mater.
But after a few weeks of living in South Carolina, I realized what a big deal college football can be and basically joined the SEC. As I started to make friends, I was asked a very important question: Am I a Gamecock or a Tiger. Honestly, I didn’t know but I chose Gamecock mostly for the excuse to yell “Goooooooo Cocks!”
It was a great decision because I joined extensive tailgates most weekends, made a lot of friends, and learned that football can apparently be a fashion show. Women wear dresses, accessories, and sometimes even heels to cheer on their team. Men wear their team colors, typically in the form of a polo shirt, but I was told “only tools actually wear their team’s jerseys.” They called me a Yankee and thought I was nuts but we both loved learning how things are done.
Even though I don’t live in the south anymore, I will always be a loyal Gamecock and I’m thrilled to now appreciate both college football and the NFL.
I’m never one to wish summer away but I wouldn’t mind if football could start this weekend! Now go link up with Erin and spread some love for your team(s)!
